Choosing a Dog Breed
What is the Best Breed of Dog for me?
Choosing a Puppy
- How many people have complained that they would love a dog, but they were not sure which breed of dog best suited them?
- How you should choose the right dog for you?
- What particular trait of the four hundred or so breeds of dog that exists, which is best suit you and your family?
- Is your lack of knowledge regarding breed selection holding you back from dog ownership?
- How can you best assess the most suitable dog for you?
- How will your new dog relate to you, are you the best owner for the particular breed of puppy you crave?
Choosing a breed that’s right for you is a very personal thing and we strongly disapprove of anyone who insists that, “this is the only dog for you”. Beware of well meaning friends. Always go with your own instincts but give careful consideration to some of the guidance and facts that you will find on our pages.
- Important factors in the choice of a dog breed.
- Should I choose a Pedigree or Crossbreed Dog?
Should the dog you choose be a Pedigree dog breed? There are more than 400 main breed types in existence so there are many to choose from. From the tiny Chihuahua, to the Pyrenean Mountain dog or the Massive St. Bernard. If you choose from the breeds in the pedigree range, at least you have a clue regarding the dog’s size, temperament and other important characteristics.
If on the other hand you choose from a mixed breed dog, then you are never really sure of how they will turn out and they may not always be what you wanted. We are not biased against mixed breeds because they can be very lovable and sometimes, depending on the mix, highly intelligent. Their affection is never in doubt.
Pedigree Dogs mean more predicable outcome.
So the lesson is that choosing one of the established pedigree breeds, providing they are well reared and bred, means your dog has predicable characteristics, which means basically that you know what to expect that you will be getting.
Once you know what your dog breed is, so you will know how your relationship with him will develop you will also know what commitment you have to devote to this new pet in your life.
Size of the dog breed you choose.
To find the right dog breed, consider the accommodation you have available?
Will the accommodation you have suit the dog? In a small flat a Great Dane or other large breed of dog would probably not be a good idea.
If your choice though, is a Yorkshire terrier or a Chihuahua, the accommodation will probably be fine.
The space available to your new dog is very important.

Characteristics of the breed
The dog breed you choose will have its own traits, depending on the many years of breeding which have been invested in developing the breed, these breed characteristics are by now part of the dogs nature and after all they are the reason that the particular breed exists. You need to know that these already built in traits are suitable for your lifestyle. For instance the Border Collie has been developed to herd sheep; the animal has great stamina and can run for miles. Unless you can give this dog lots of exercise, it will not be happy cooped up in a restricted small flat. The old saying, “its horses for courses” applies equally to dogs inasmuch as it’s the way the dog has developed which greatly influences the dog’s future behavior and which you should carefully evaluate and understand.
Other factors to Consider in choosing your Dog?
Are there children? Do you have any allergic problems, can you give your dog regular exercise, will the new dog possibly not get on with other pets you already have, either other dogs or maybe cats?
The choice of Dog you make is very important you have to bear in mind that a commitment of ten to fifteen years is the likely length of the relationship. Please make sure it is well considered and we hope that it will be most successful.
