What You Need to Know – Why Do Dogs Dig?
You will have lots of options when looking for a puppy. You may be looking to buy a puppy or just adopt one for free. Although there are usually lots of puppies available, the real question is how to choose the right puppy. Here are a few things to be aware of, to ensure that you are happy with your choice.
First, if you are looking to be involved in showing and breeding down the road, consult a reputable kennel owner. Ask your vet for recommendations if you are unsure. There are too many sleazy operations and puppy mills operating as it is. Why support these places? Investigate carefully before you go looking. The last thing you want to happen is to fall for a puppy and then subsequently find out that he has severe health issues.
Second, if you decide to buy from a pet store, ask for written documentation showing where the puppies come from. This doesn’t usually occur to people who go to a pet store in search of a puppy. After all, it’s a pet store. Surely they must love animals and take good care of them. Otherwise why would they have a pet store? Right? Well, not always.
Appearance
The German Shepherd is one of the large breeds of dog, which grows to approximately 22 to 26 inches in height and weighs between 50 and 88lbs. According to the Kennel Club, the breed should have a domed forehead with a long muzzle and black nose. It also has brown eyes of a medium size and large erect ears. According to the breed specifications, the German Shepherd should have a long neck, which is raised when excited. Another prominent feature of the breed is a long bushy tail, which should reach the hock.
The breed has a variety of colors, the most common being black and tan or red and tan. However, German Shepherd’s can also be all black, all white, sable, liver, brindle, blue and panda.
Temperament and Character
Unfortunately, in some quarters, the breed has a reputation for biting humans and attacking smaller dogs. However, reputable sources, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Veterinary Medical Association, argue that there is no accurate way to determine the bite rate of breeds, because of inaccurate reports and mixed breeding. Moreover, studies have shown that smaller dogs are much more likely to bite than larger dogs. Of course, due to the fact that German Shepherds are popular pets and often used for protection, the statistical analysis, on which claims of aggression in German Shepherds is based, is flawed.
The best way to stop the digging habit and protect your yard is to not allow the dog any unsupervised time outside. As long as he is actively supervised he will not have the opportunity to dig.
Another way to protect your plants and grass is to give him a designated area to dig. This could be required if you have a true blue digger, by redirecting his habit to a place that you deal with having dug up you can both win. If you do not have the space to provide a digging spot build a sandbox and fill it with sand and soil mixed together. Correct him if he tries to dig outside of his ‘zone’ and then let him have his fun in his space.
With some patience and a bit of trial and error your dog and your garden can live together in peace.

Using Positive Reinforcement And Rewards: Advice To Train Your Dog
Training dogs using positive reinforcement and reward training has long been recognized as both highly effective for the owner and a positive experience for the dog. Positive reinforcement training is very important that it is the only method used to train dangerous animals like lions and tigers for work in circuses and in the movie and television industry.
Proponents of positive reinforcement have been improved by the effectiveness of their techniques, and it is true that the vast majority of dogs respond well to these training methods.
One reason that positive reinforcement training is very effective is that is uses rewards to teach the dog what is expected of it. When the dog performs the desired behavior, he is provided with a reward, most often in the form of a food treat, but it could be a scratch behind the ears, a rub under the chin or a pat on the head as well. The important thing is that the dog is rewarded consistently for doing the right thing.
Reward training has become increasingly popular in recent years, but chances are some sort of reward training between humans and dogs has been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years.
When understanding what makes reward training so effective, some knowledge of the history of humans and dogs is very helpful. The earliest dogs were probably wolf pups that were tamed and used by early humans for protection from predators, as alarm systems and later for guarding and herding livestock.
It is possible that the wolf pups that made the best companions were the most easily trained, or it is possible that these early dogs were orphaned or abandoned wolf pups. Whatever their origin, there is little doubt today that the vast variety of dogs we see today have their origin in the humble wolf. Wolf packs, like packs of wild dogs, operate on a strict pack hierarchy. Since wolf and dog packs hunt as a group, this type of hierarchy, and the cooperation it brings, is essential to the survival of the species. Every dog in the pack knows his or her place in the pack, and except in the event of death or injury, the hierarchy, once built, rarely changes.
Every dog, therefore, is hard wired by nature to look to the pack leader for guidance. The basis of all good dog training, including reward based training, is for the handler to set him or herself up as the pack leader. The pack leader is more than just the dominant dog, or the one who tells all the subordinates what to do. Most of all, the pack leader provides leadership and protection, and his or her leadership is vital to the success and survival of the pack.
It is important for the dog to see itself as part of a pack, to recognize the human as the leader of that pack, and to respect his or her authority. Some dogs are much easier to dominate than others. If you watch a group of puppies playing for a little while, you will quickly recognize the dominant and submissive personalities.
A dog with a more submissive personality will generally be easier to train using positive reinforcement, since he or she will not want to challenge the handler for leadership. Even dominant dogs, however, respond very well to positive reinforcement. There are, in fact, few dogs that do not respond well to positive reinforcement, also known as reward training.
Positive reinforcement is also the best way to retrain a dog that has behavior problems, especially one that has been abused in the past. Getting the respect and trust of an abused dog can be very difficult, and positive reinforcement is better than any other training method at creating this important bond.
No matter what type of dog you are working with, chances are it can be helped with positive reinforcement training methods. Based training methods on respect and trust, rather than on intimidation and fear, is the best way to get the most from any dog.

Dog Separation Anxiety And Ways To Avoid It
Leaving your canine alone is a necessity if you work outside of the home and there is no one else to keep him company. As a result, dog separation anxiety may occur. This article will show you what to look for and hopefully prevent this from happening altogether.
Separation anxiety in dogs is a common occurrence, especially if your pet has been rescued from a shelter and was previously abandoned. This canine has self esteem issues and needs reassurance that your absence will not be forever. First, how to spot this issue.
Dogs with separation anxiety will exhibit these types of behaviors:
Excessive barking, destruction of furniture, clawing at the door, (which will be evident when you return home) inappropriate urination and defecation if he has been otherwise house broken; and other behaviors not within the norm.
They will bark, howl, chew and generally destroy your belongings and furniture. My dog “Co-Co” once managed to plant garbage inside my perfectly made bed! I had cleaned up the trail of trash and went to retire for the night. Upon pulling back the covers, there it was: a pile of coffee grounds-along with the filter!
She had grown accustomed to being with me everywhere I went-even in the car for trips to the store. When I abruptly changed this routine, she reacted with inappropriate behavior. I looked for ways to cure dog separation anxiety and gradually broke her of it.
First of all, do not make a big production out of leaving the house with long good-byes and lots of cooing and carrying on. This will get the dog excited, perhaps getting the impression that he will be joining you. Then once you leave, this energy will go into destroying the house.
Another mistake people make is a dramatic return to reassure the dog. The last thing you want to do is encourage destructive behavior, so if there is evidence of “fowl play” when you walk in the door, express your dislike for the mess with saying “shame” in a disapproving tone, but do not look at the dog or interact with him until it is clean.
If your dog is naturally full of energy, set aside the time for a walk and play before you depart your residence. Helping him to work off some of this energy may help. It’s always good to keep a routine, but if you will be changing it, plan in advance, or you will have a problem.
To help avoid dog separation anxiety, gradually get him adjusted to being alone by leaving for very short periods and different intervals. Remember not to make a big deal of your departure or when you return.
Some people will leave the television on for their pooch to alleviate the sense of isolation. Or perhaps introduce a play pal if that is feasible: another pet or someone to come in and walk him in the afternoons to break up a long lonely day.

What Are YOUR Dog Stairs Made Of?
Choosing a set of dog stairs does require a certain amount of effort in making sure that the stairs will meet both yours and your dog’s needs. Some of your concerns might be that the stairs won’t be sturdy enough or that they will stick out like a sore thumb in your home. Hopefully by the end of this article your concerns will be soothed and you’ll be ready to shop around!
If you have already had a look around the Internet at dog stairs, you’ve probably noticed that the three main core materials available in dog stairs are plastic, metal, and wood. Let’s start this chat by addressing plastic steps. If you will have more than one use for your pet steps, such as moving them between a couch and a chair (that are the same height), as well as aiding your dog in and out of your car, then you might find the lightweight feature of plastic stairs a particular benefit. Just a bit of fair warning: most plastic steps require some sort of assembly, depending on the brand and type of steps, and they also usually come in a limited range of colors (tan). With plastic steps, you have to be particularly conscious of the weight restrictions; a smaller weight capacity is definitely a down side to most plastic stairs.
Metal stairs are generally used for loading and unloading your dog into the car, but they can be used for other purposes as well. They aren’t nearly as light as plastic steps, but they are very easy to store or take with you in your car as many (but not all) are built with the ability to collapse into itself. The adjustable incline (again, not all metal steps have this feature, but most do) allows you to adjust the steps to various heights, which means more versatility! Metal stairs are great for all sizes of pets and usually have a fairly high weight capacity. They probably wouldn’t be the most attractive type of stairs to have in your home, however.
Last, and probably the most popular choice in pet stair material, is wood. Wood dog steps are extremely durable. They can hold an excessive amount of weight and they won’t easily be knocked over. Many come with padded steps to prevent your pet from slipping and to add just a touch of comfort to his movements. They also come in a variety of colored wood and carpeted finish. The color range of carpeting is vast, so no matter what your décor requires, there’s a color to suit it!
Now that you’re aware of the different types of pet stairs, your luck in choosing the best stairs for your pet should be a little smoother. Good luck and happy shopping!
Dog Tricks: 3 Easy Ways
To teach your dog tricks, even easy ones, you need to have some small reward treats, be in a quiet comfortable place and keep the training sessions to 10 – 15 minutes, or your dog will start to get bore, remember when he gets something right, lots of praise, and a reward treat, just be careful not to get him over excited or he will lose concentration.
Getting your dog to give you his paw, first get your dog to sit, then as you say the word ‘paw’ take your dogs paw in your hand, give the dog a treat, repeat this, after a few times do not take his paw so quickly, say the word, count to one then take it, you should notice he is bringing his paw up as you say the word if he does not go back to saying it at the same time, do it a few more times and then slow your response again. Most dogs will pick this one up happily after 2 or 3 sessions.
The high five, like a lot of tricks the high five is a progression of an earlier trick, in this cast the paw trick. Hold a treat in your fingers and raise your hand slightly higher than you would for the paw trick. Your dog will think you want to do the paw trick and will reach for the treat with his paw as we taught him earlier, as he reaches up you say “high five” and give him the treat. Once your dog has mastered the paw trick this one should be very easy to learn and with just a few sessions he will be doing it on hand signal rather than voice control.
Getting your dog to jump through a hoop, before you start this one, I would just like to ask you to be a little sensible and not hold the hoop too high as you do not want your dog to hurt himself while doing the trick. Sit your dog on one side of a hoola hoop, get the dogs attention on your hand on the other side of the hoop, take a treat in your hand and give the dog the command to release him from the sit position, at first he may attempt to go around or under the hoop, if this happens start again, your dog wants the treat and will soon learn that going around or under does not get it, so he will soon start going through it, when he does, say hoopla and give him the treat. He will soon be jumping through the hoop on the command of hoopla. When I started doing this trick I had a medium sized dog (a Labrador) so I started with the hoop 6 inches from the ground and slowly raised it to waist height, if you have a smaller dog, you might want to start with the hoop touching the ground so the dog just goes through the hoop and then slowly raise it as he gets used to the trick.
Discount Dog Bed : An Option
Many people want to make sure their family pet has just the right bed, but might not be willing to pay the (often quite hefty) price. To find discount dog beds for average sized animals is actually a lot easier than to find designer and luxury dog beds especially for oversized pets. If you’re not too fussy about the design of the fabrics being used in the bed; if your dog is of average size and weight; and if her sleeping habits are not too extreme in the curling up or stretching out situations; you can probably save a lot of money when you purchase a dog bed that’s right for her.
To begin with, a lot of the more expensive bed-makers change their designs just like clothing designers do for people, if not quite as often. The changes do result in closeouts and discontinued items being drastically marked down at pet shops across the country and on the Internet. Then there are the many pet supermarkets and discount retailers who carry a variety of comfortable beds, in various of colors at prices much reduced from the luxury beds available at upscale pet shops.
Then there is always the option to go ahead and make your own dog bed. If you’ve got any sewing ability at all, (and for the most part, a dog bed is more about being comfortable and durable than about looking great) you can produce an average-sized, comfortable, washable dog bed for just a few dollars worth of fabric and filler material. Cut a couple of pieces of fabric – it can be from an old sheet, a shower curtain, or a nice comfy old bathrobe – and sew them together to make a pillow of the right size. Stuff it with filler material and you have a comfy, simple dog bed. You may also create a fancier dog bed with an upper ring by cutting a long rectangle of fabric and creating a tubular pillow to go around the edge. Then fasten the upper ring to the original base with hand stitching.
You have just created a comfortable, washable bed for your dog made with love by your own two hands using a piece of material you’d probably throw away, some kind of filler material and a little bit of your precious time. What better way to save money and take care of your loving pet at the same time? You’ll enjoy the process of making the bed just as much as your pet will enjoy sleeping in it.

Dog Training and Obedience- Advantages to You and Your Puppy.
It isn’t easy to train your puppy, but if you want your life with the dog to be happy, he needs to be trained. An undisciplined pet can be unmanageable, disrupting the harmony of the family and, in an extreme case, the dog’s behavior may necessitate his removal from the home.
If you are going to be responsible for the dog, you have to be ready to train them correctly. Do not delay training until fido starts to act up and cause problems. Rather, the training should start as soon as the dog is introduced into your house. It might be hard at times and will push your patience to the edge, but if you keep training then all that will work will result in a dog that is trained and enjoyed by your whole family.
Both your pet and your family will derive several advantages as a result of appropriate dog training and obedience. It will be a pleasure spending time with your dog. A dog left untrained in obedience will display behaviors you won’t like. These include but are not limited to: barking, biting, chewing, digging and running off or escaping.
These unrestrained activities will disrupt the normal life of the family, frazzle your nerves, and cause ill will and resentment toward the dog. His behavior will not just be upsetting to you, but the results of your dog’s behavior will cause you a lot of undue stress. An ideal pet does not destroy things in your home or garden. He doesn’t escape and run will-nilly down the street or through other people’s yards. No one enjoys an uncontrollable pet. Untrained dogs may not obey their owners. It’s a sad fact that some families must place their dogs elsewhere because they have failed to correct their pets’ bad behavior.
By failing to train your dog you do him a great disservice. Give your dog the tools he needs to become an obedient, well-trained member of the family. However, there are a lot of other advantages that your dog might have if you work on training him the correct way. Untrained dogs may find themselves in risky situations that might result in them getting hurt or even dying because of their lack of training.
Dogs love exercise and it’s required for their health. Its natural for them to want to run and explore. Walk your pet daily and keep him leashed, this will remove the risk of him escaping and being struck by a car. If a dog gets loose, he may become distracted and be incapable of finding his way home. Life on the street is brutal for a dog. It’s possible he could succumb to disease, starvation or malnutrition. If your dog runs away, he might also get caught taken to the pound, where he might be put down.
These aren’t the only bad things that can happen to an untrained or disobedient dog. If your dog isn’t taught that chewing is not okay as a puppy, they might think they can chew anything they want. This might result in them eating something that can kill them or eating food that keeps their intestines from functioning properly.
The advantages of dog training and obedience are too lengthy to list. But the benefits are tremendous. It is up to you to love, protect and train your dog.
You’ll be glad you did!

Essentials Of Dog Grooming
Dog grooming should be a serious part of your dog care regimen as a responsible owner. The right grooming helps your dog both look good. Grooming embodies several different areas. Here we have a glance at the essential of dog grooming.
One of the first things to do to promise your dog is groomed properly is to brush his/her hair. Not brushing your dog’s hair often enough may lead to caught fur which in turn could finish up damaging the dog’s coat. Regular brushing can help stop that and maintain the coat.
While hair brushing is important, you needn’t brush your dog’s hair daily. The frequency of brushing that your dog requires will depend upon the length of the coat. Dogs with longer hair need more frequent brushing as compared to dogs with shorter hair.
Another significant part of correct dog grooming is a bath. All your cleaning and grooming efforts can only be of use if you give your dog a bath. With a bath, the coat and skin of your dog become clean. Any dirt or bacteria get washed away. This means that the dog remains healthy.
You do not have to wash your dog on a day-to-day basis. Often , showering them once a month suffices adequately. However, if your dog has soiled himself, he should be given a bath at the earliest. There are certain considerations to take under consideration while bathing your dog though . One such consideration is the water temperature. The water should be of moderate temperature and neither to hot nor cold. Also, ensure that the hair shampoos you use on your pet are of top quality.
Nail clipping is another important aspect of the dog grooming regime. Dogs with long nails are not simply a menace to passers by, they may fall ill due to several unwelcome things which are stuck in their paws. Nail clipping eliminates the possibility of any such problem.
This makes your dog prone to sicknesses. So, it is important that you trim your dog’s nails on a regular basis. It’s likely that your dog may resist nail trimming. This is essentially because dogs do not appreciate their nails being trimmed. So, you’ll have to handle your dog with great care. Try not cut the nails exactly from the edges as even a little pain can make your dog go berserk. Ensure that you use professional dog clippers to trim your pet’s nails.
A well groomed dog basically becomes its owner’s pride.
The 18 “Don’ts” Rules: A Must To Know for Success Dog Training
A well-train dog usually leads a happier and healthier life and its owner also can enjoy a trouble-free lifelong companion. As we know, the essential and important to dog’s education are dog training – basic obedience, house and potty training.
The conventional method of dog training tips and guide would be to list a series of things that you should “Do” and you might even know the A-Z of dog training! But sometimes what should be done can be said best by telling what should not be done.
This article seeks to list 18 “Don’t” when you train your dog. The reasons for the don’ts will become evident as the lessons continue and each one is based upon the distinctive psychology of the dog’s mind.
- DON’T punish your dog while you are angry or lack control of yourself.
- DON’T punish your dog with the lead or any instrument of training or anything he should associate with duty or pleasure.
- DON’T sneak up on your dog or grab him from the rear.
- DON’T chase your dog to catch him; dog must come to you or run after you.
- DON’T coax your dog to you and then turn upon him with the whip. You will regret the deception.
- DON’T trick or fool or taunt your dog. It is cruel and inconsistent to tease your canine to come to you when he cannot.
- DON’T punish a dog by stepping on his paws needlessly. They are exceedingly sensitive. Don’t twist his ears playfully or otherwise. Never strike him on the backbone, in the face or on the ears.
- DON’T grab your dog or reach for him quickly. He should never fear you, should not be made nervous by his master, and should feel that punishment given is deserved.
- DON’T nag your dog; don’t be giving orders to him constantly; don’t pester him with your shoutings.
- DON’T praise a dog for doing a certain act, then at a later time, scold him for doing the same act. If you permit him to bite your toes today and think it fun, do not strike him for doing it tomorrow, when you are not in good humor. Consistency is a chief virtue in dog training.
- DON’T train your dog immediately or soon after he has eaten.
- DON’T lose patience with a puppy younger than six months. Never kick or throw a puppy nor lift him by the head or leg or skin of the neck.
- DON’T train him in feats requiring much strength or endurance until he is at least six months old.
- DON’T work your dog without some short rest or play periods during training. It’s worthy to training your dog with a five-minute rest for every fifteen minutes.
- DON’T permit everyone to give commands to your dog. While you are training him, he must be a one-man dog, depending on you alone to feed him and care for him.
- DON’T consider tricks the chief end or the chief part of training. Usefulness is the object sought in all instruction of the dog. Acts that spring naturally from the dog’s instincts are to be fostered.
- DON’T expect your dog to be a wonderful dog after a few weeks of training; four months to a year may be necessary in order to make the master proud of him, but the work is worth the effort. Training never ends.
- DON’T jump to the conclusion that your dog is dumb. He may differ with you believing that the trainer should know more than the dog.
To end, try to remember these 18 Don’ts rules, enjoy training your canine and most importantly have lots of fun along the way!
A Canine Is For Life Not Just For Christmas
My family run an animal sanctuary in Birmingham, England. While we love what we do, we feel that some people want to realise that a pet ought to be a long term commitment. They ought to not be seen as just a little bit of fun that they’ll then dispose of after they get bored.
Many people arrive at the animal sanctuary with their pets, which are mainly dogs, with many excuses on why they are not in a position to appear after or care for them. I’m positive several of their reasons are valid however am conjointly aware that several others are just an excuse to dump them.
The reasons they provide are varied:
I have recently divorced from my husband and will not afford to stay this dog as a pet
The dog has began to bite my children
The dog is too tough to handle and is destroying my furniture
We tend to have recently moved into a flat. One of their rules is that no animals can live in these flats
The dog barks to abundant and it’s upsetting the neighbours
Our alternative animals don’t just like the dog
The dog is affecting my health
I am too unwell to seem when my dog
It is not our role to question these reasons but what we then want to do is to find another appropriate home for the dogs. This can be easier said than done as we tend to want to make sure that the new house owners will be in a position to worry for them, for hopefully the period of their life.
We conjointly keep several of the dogs as our own pets, especially the ones which nobody else appears to want. One such dog is termed Cassie. She is filled with life and has been unwell treated it looks when she was a puppy. Half of her left ear is missing and he or she is seemingly quite frightened of men.
Cassie is need of a large amount of care and attention. She can be too lively every now and then which is presumably why 3 individuals who attempted to re-home her, have bought her back. She is not aggressive in any way however will tend to jump up at people.
What we tend to did with Cassie and what we have a tendency to will continue to try and do, is to relinquish her heaps of love however additionally a very little bit of coaching of what’s good and what is not acceptable. It takes a very long time, however she is currently able to perceive that the jumping is not wished and that she desires to sit back out at times.
Cassie is turning into a beautiful dog to possess around the house and now feels for the first time as half of a family.
With a very little more patience most alternative dogs can turn out this way. This can be why we tend to wish more folks to take more responsibility and to offer their animals more of a chance to settle into their homes, and to induce used to a new set of rules.
Having animals as pets can be very rewarding, nearly as rewarding as having a child. A dog however can rarely answer you back.
If you are having problems along with your animals you’ll be able to invariably phone up animal sanctuaries for advice and to hear concerning potential solutions. The people who work there are animal lovers and will facilitate your as abundant as they can.
If you’re unable to continue trying once the pet, the sanctuary ought to be in a position to take them off you. Find more other helpful information about best car insurance companies, cheap auto insurance rate and auto insurance rate comparison

Learning How to Deal with Dog Aggression.
Aggression is as natural to a dog as howling. Some dogs are raised specifically for their aggressive tendencies. If your pet is a Terrier, a hunt-and-kill breed, or a German Shepherd, an excellent farm guard dog, that behavior is not going to change no matter how much you try to. Thus, the first step to having a gentle family pet is to choose a gentle breed.
Check out this article on Dog Training in Boston Information .
The Understanding Of Dog Aggression.
Generally gentle dogs are forced to be aggressive by specific circumstnces. Dealing with dog aggression requires an understanding of what triggers the behavior. What follows is a listing of some triggers:
1. Pain. This does not require a lenghty discussion. Pain causes irrational behavior. In the case of dogs, even the mildest pain can make them aggressive. It’s an instinctive reaction to want to get away from what makes the pain intense. When you’re feeling your dog up for broken bones after being run over by a truck, he’d definitely yelp, bite or growl aggressively when your fingers connect with a painful spot.
2. Fear. New situations, enivironment, places and even people evoke fear in your dog. The need for self-preservation surfaces in the face of fear and makes an otherwise calm dog unleash his wild side. Dogs who exhibit unfounded aggression toward others, including people, lack appropriate social skills. They regard unfammiliar things or animals as threats to themselves.
Find out about training from Instant Dog Training Videos Review.
3. Territorial Instinct. Dogs protect their onwers, homes, toys, puppies – whatever they consider their own from perceived threats. It’s instinct to them.Anything your dog considers his, he won’t hesitate to attack to preserve it against strangers. This is exactly what many look for in their dogs.
4. Dominance. This is the most common trigger of aggression in animals competing for a higher spot in their social order. This is a natural kind of aggression in the dog hierarchy. Dogs feel the instinctive urge to test their strength against others when there’s no apparent leader of the pack. Fights normally turn bloody for a leadership post. For the cohesiveness of the pack and survival of the species, this is essential. Left to their own defenses, dominance is how dogs set up social order in the pack.
Control Strategies.
With this understanding, don’t you feel more capable to tackle dog aggression?
Don’t make his pain worse if he is obviously suffering; your dog won’t bite if you don’t worsen his pain.Assume the leadership role. Be certain your dog knows that and sees everyone in the family as being above him. Demonstrating this authority line early on ensures your dog obeys you and respects everyone in the family. When your dog’s aggressiveness is totally uncalled for, it could be fear-induced; deal with the cause of the fear.
Of all situations or causes, pain is the least difficult to address. To control fear and dominance aggression, dogs must be trained to socialize and have a clear leader. The secret is to start training your dog right away – when he first comes home with you. When dealing with aggression in adult dogs, don’t be reluctant to consult professionals.

If it is feasible on old dogs, it’s also usually effective on young puppies, too.As is the standard in dog training, the reason for clicker training is to have dogs associate the sound of the click with a specific behavior, hopefully positive.
Before proceeding, see Clickertraining: the 4 secrets of becoming a supertrainer review for more information.
It should not be suprising for clicker training to have been made the standard in behavaior training. The click is an excellent marker for that precise moment the behavior was performed; it communicates to the dog the exact reason he’s receiving treats.
How it Operates.
Perhaps because of positive feedback, you’d now like to learn how clicker training works so you can use it on your little furry friend or to teach your dear old companion some excitng new tricks. This method of training conveys to your dog that you are rewarding his obedience to your commands. When training your dog to sit on command, you can deliberately push his rump downward while telling him to, “Sit.”.Click then give him a treat at the exact second his butt his the floor.Train with this exercise a few times.Eventually, your dog learns that the treats come with following the command.
See an interesting article on How To Teach Dog Tricks.
Teaching Your Dog with the Clicker.
To see is to believe; try it and believe.Be warned however, that when you start using the clicker on your dog, don’t forget to.
Reward at each click. The clicker is a prop for training. You must only use it when training. You won’t need the clicker beyond the time when your dog shows understanding verbal commands by performing it.
Persevere.Just like humans, dogs have different IQs.Their intelligence notwithstanding, dogs are not as clever as humans. If your toddlers can be trying, dogs can, too; don’t expect too much, especially of a previously untrained dog.Don’t be easily frustrated with your dog.
Close each clicker session on a positively light mood.Your dog will recall the last thing you had him do on the session. If the session hasn’t gone as planned, don’t close it feeling annoyed with your dog; he’d be discouraged and won’t try again next time.To be sure it ends with your dog happy about himself, work a final time on a command he has previously learned and you know he can carry out very well. .For example, order him to sit a couple of times just prior to calling it a day.Be mindful of clicking and rewarding him with a rub behind the ears or a treat. He’d be looking forward to the next training session.
Be Careful to Do it Right.
Because it’s all about precise timing, you want to make sure you’re doing it correctly.Your dog needs your timing to be perfect to easily connect the commands with the sound of the clicks. Before using the clicker on your pet, train on precise clicking.

Whenever you see that he is sniffing, circling or beginning to squat, immediately take him outside to the place where you want him to go and see if he eliminates. If he does, praise him lavishly. A good idea is to have a cue, such as “hurry up” so that your puppy knows what you want him to do. When he is going to the bathroom repeat the cue and then give your dog lots of praise for a job well done. Don’t take a chance for an accident happening inside the house, so it is better to take the dog out.
Have a Schedule
Feeding, watering and walking your dog on a regular schedule will make housebreaking that much easier. Puppies are like children and they thrive on a routine. To make your dog to be able to adjust their bodily functions, it is better to try and take the dog out around the same time everyday. The first thing you should do in the morning is take the puppy from the crate and don’t let his feet touch the ground. Bring him to the place where you want him to go, give the cue, and praise upon a successful completion. Take your puppy out at least every two hours, after eating or drinking and especially after play. Before you know it, your puppy will be letting you know it is time to go out and do his business.
Don’t Let the Puppy Roam
Letting your puppy roam around the house is a sure fire way to have accidents. If you have decided you don’t want to use a crate, and even if you do use one, limiting the dog to certain areas of the house can make housetraining easier for everyone. It is difficult to keep track of a puppy when he has the run of the house, but if you place him in the kitchen, he will still be able to be part of the action and can be better supervised in case of an accident.
Don’t Get Discouraged
There will be times when you first begin housetraining that you feel your pup is just not getting it. He may have accidents in the house as well on occasion.Don’t get discourage. If you stick to your routine, keep a good eye on the dog and make frequent outings to his outdoor bathroom, in no time your puppy will be housebroken. Another good idea is to use the same door all the time when you are taking him out so that when he has to go, he will scratch on the door to be let out. Once this happens, you can say hurray and know that your puppy truly is beginning to understand that going to the bathroom in the house is a no-no.

Treats are an obvious reward but other rewards could be verbal praise and toys. Several shorter sessions are usually better than one long one. Training should not involve any negative components or punishment. There should be no shouting, no hitting or smacking, no chain jerking on choke chains or collars, and absolutely no electric shocking! Each training session should be enjoyable and positive with rewards for jobs well done.
Training with head collars
Pulling on the lead is one of the few unpleasant experiences of bringing up a new puppy or dog. Over the last few years, using a head collar for dog training has become very popular. Training with a head collar does have some advantages over the traditional training collar. Although very simple to use, it is important that head collars are fitted correctly and your dog properly introduced to the collar. Compare to traditional training collar, head collars are generally more intuitive. Head collars are very effective when controlling dogs in difficult situations.

Dog grooming also involves clipping nails and you must guarantee your dog’s nails don’t grow too big as they can hurt themselves while scratching. Clip nails every 2-3 weeks or depending on the expansion.
Older Dog Housetraining When There Are Psychological Issues
There can be cases where there is a breakdown and regression of older dog housetraining habits that may start as psychological and eventually end up being a medical issue. An example of this would be the dog that suddenly forgets his housebreaking and urinates out of jealousy and spite.
Your dog housetraining at this stage almost feels wasted and forgotten. Your dog could develop a psychosomatic urinary tract infection, therefore giving him a reason to eliminate at will anywhere in the house. Such a condition can be inspired by the arrival of another pet like a cat or a bird, a new baby, or any other attention-stealing tangible. Verbally punishing at these times may only aggravate the issue.
Your Dog Is Attention Seeking
The dog is getting attention, which is what it wanted in the first place and as long as it is getting this extra attention, whether it is shaming or admonishment, it will continue whatever action prompts the attention. Competition may lead to a regression of housebreaking behavior without it resulting in a psychosomatic urinary tract infection. The dog owner should understand that competition alone could cause of the problem and as such when there is competition, the dog wets.
The competition may be all in his head or reality and a complete exam to find out if any current changes in the family or household may be necessary. Something may be giving the dog a feeling that its position, or your affection for it is in jeopardy. Whether or not it is true or imagined, to the dog it is real. If the problem is the result of competitiveness, you can increase quality time with your dog, possibly even being overly affectionate, and this may work in reversing the motive that results in bad deeds. Spend time with your dog and do a little dog house training.
Bad Dog Behavior
Then, you have the kind of dog who feels free to wet everywhere and on everything including your furniture and bed in order to try and control the environment he is in. This is the type of dog who is self-oriented, selfish and narcissistic and it wets on everything to claim its territory. This is a dog that needs a master in all the purest and literal sense of the word.
That type of dog realizes that it is the leader of the pack, although he really doesn’t want to be. This dog is insecure and needs, strong and confident leadership. This behavior occurs or comes about when relaxed and easy going dog owners who baby and spoil their dogs, and the relativity of love and discipline is more balanced toward love.
Your old pet may need reminding of your affection for him and they love you being the leader, so make the time to do refresher courses on dog housetraining.
Teaching your dog to come when called
Allowing your dog to run off leash is fine, if you live in the country. In areas where there is heavy traffic and other animals and children at play it is not a good idea to allow your pooch unlimited freedom, especially without dog behavior training.
Allowing such freedom teaches the dog that he is his own boss and can do what he pleases, that it is more fun being away from his master. He may even be taught that his fun is ruined when his owner appears.
If every time you call for your dog and he receives an unpleasant activity such as a bath, grooming or a visit to the vet, he will definitely begin to avoid your commands to come, as he will learn that if he does, something he does not really enjoy occurs.
I took this into consideration when thinking about how to train my dog to come when I commanded. Imagine, for a moment, that you are your dog and having a wonderful time running in the park with your canine friends and here comes your master to ruin your fun.
You are free, so you decide to run off. If he can’t catch you he can not take you away from your friends. You may even think it’s a game when your owner attempts to chase you down, yelling and calling your name.
This is what we do not want and why dog obedience lessons are needed from an early age to avoid this unwanted behavior. There are certain breeds that have an instinct to run and hunt. Teaching your dog to squelch these instincts until being told to use them is the key.
Your dog is constantly learning, so make every activity you do as enjoyable as possible, even when a formal training is in session. Always use praise and rewards whenever possible.
When your dog obeys the command to come, be sure to reward him each time he does so, using “good boy/girl” and offer up a treat if desired to reinforce this positive behavior. When treats are involved, no dog can resist obedience!
Most dogs are food motivated, but consistency is the main issue. Once your dog learns there are pleasant consequences to his actions, he will be happy to oblige his owner every time a command is made.
When I began to train my dog, I really made an effort to make sure it was enjoyable for both of us, and it really seemed like playtime. When dog behavior training becomes more of a chore than play, it may be time to consult an expert and enroll both of you in some classes.

Pet health insurance isn’t a novel idea by any means. The concept has been around for 15-20 years. Many people believe that having medical insurance for a pet isn’t justified, and is rather something that depicts indulgence. But, the truth is that pet health insurance has nothing to try to to with being lavish. It purely depends on how a lot of you take care of your pet. It’s the query of whether or not you concentrate on your pet a part of your family, and therefore, would need to have it insured.
Pet health insurance plans take many aspects into consideration before awarding an insurance cover. The choice might be primarily based on several considerations – species, age, pre-existing health conditions and lifestyle of the pet (i.e. a docile one compared to one of a sports dog). Some of the pet insurance corporations don’t have an age limit. But, it’s easier to induce pet health insurance if your pet isn’t too old. So, insurance schemes usually start off at an early age of around half-dozen weeks for a dog.
The choice to possess pet health insurance also depends a heap on your pet’s current health. If, God forbid, your canine is plagued by a fatal ailment, then there’s no purpose having him insured. Moreover, getting insurance in such a case is all the more tough to mention the least. Pet health insurance costs vary widely owing a lot of to the broad selection of insurance packages available. Comprehensive pet health insurance schemes cowl the prices of annual checkups, vaccinations, routine care and preventive medications, and spay/neuter surgeries. Partial plans solely cowl accident and illness costs.
Insurance schemes are not for everyone. It may be the case that your dog’s current health condition does not satisfy the wants of the insurance company. However you should not be disheartened in such a scenario. Some medical facilities offer pet wellness packages, which allow you to avail vaccinations and pet health checkups at discounted prices. You may go ahead for one such scheme.

Training Tips To House Break Your Puppy
The Time You Take To Train Your Puppy is Priceless!
Dogs make wonderful pets and the key factor to having a well behaved dog that the whole family will enjoy, is by using proper dog training techniques. Dogs are kind-of like kids, especially puppies; they need to understand the rules of the household and they must respect the authority of their owners. Many new pet owners fall in love with cute puppies or even adult dogs that they purchase or adopt before they bring them home, only to become upset and frustrated when that adorable fur-ball chews up the furniture or makes messes on the carpet. While all puppies will find their share of trouble, a responsible dog owner must be patient and utilize plenty of time to raise that pup into a well behaved dog that is a joy to all. This article will provide some basic but very important dog training tips to help you and your puppy develop a happy relationship. I have learned over 50 years of owning and dogs and these tips are a great start.
Establish The Rules
The first step in dog training is to establish the rules of the household, and do not waste any time here! This means that if you don’t want your 100 pound Labrador Retriever jumping up on your bed at night, don’t let him do it when he’s a puppy at 5 pounds! Never let him do it. I know it’s tough because I am guilty, but take it from my lesson leaned. Never; not even once. Good news: it is never too early to teach your pup to stay off the furniture or avoid jumping on you or your guests. Oh, and don’t forget, before you bring your puppy home, make sure the whole family understands and is prepared to enforce the rules consistently.
Be Consistent With The Rules
Once your learn and establish rules, it is up to you and the rest of thre family to makes sure you live by them.Every time your puppy breaks a house rule, he should be reprimanded with a quick and firm “No!” and then shown the proper behavior. This applies to all aspects of your puppy’s training, such as house breaking and chewing on his toys instead of your shoes (they seem to love to chew up the shoes!). Just like kids, dogs learn the rules quickest when they are enforced consistently. This means that the dog owner(s) must be disciplined in their enforcement of the “rules.” With time, the rules become second nature to your dog and enforcement is rarely required.
Reward Your Puppy For Good Behavior!
This is a key tip. When your puppy follows the rules appropriately, reward him for his good behavior. Effective dog training requires positive reinforcement more often than punishment to produce great dog behavior. At the beginning of your dog training, make a big deal about his good behavior and give him a healthy edible treat. Within a short period of time, your puppy will understand what he’s supposed to do and you will be able to “wean” him off treats to praise and positive attention. Trust me on this, they are smart and learn quick.
I am not a “pro” at dog training but I have read a lot of books and of course have owned dogs for years. What I have found is that dog training is not particularly difficult, it just takes some reading, some patience, and definitely some consistency to gain success with these wonderful animals. The time you put in to training your puppy is well worth the years of enjoyment you, your family, and your guests will have with this new member of the tribe!
Some Dog Training Recommendations That Are Worth A Try
There are hundreds of thousands of different dog training ideas you could try. You don’t need to train them all those fancy tricks but there are a few basic skills that all dogs should learn. To avoid this, it’s important to choose the effective dog training tips that have proven to work. These are a few of the most basic but important dog training tips that you should be working on with your dog.
Teaching a dog to sit sounds simple but it ca actually be quite tough, especially if you’re working with an older dog. Training a dog to sit is so important so they’ll know not to jump up on guests at your home and make it easier for you to calm them down when being checked at the vet. To teach your dog to sit you want to have the dog standing and then tell them sternly to sit. Then you want to tell them sternly to “sit” and make sure that you repeat the command several times.
Whenever your dog sits you need to encourage them, either with a clicking device or a treat. This positive affirmation is going to let them know that they’re getting rewarded for doing what they were told. The dog may seem confused at first but with practice and patience you’ll teach them what “sit” means and that they’re being rewarded every time they do it when they’re told. By doing this they recognize exactly what they’re being rewarded for.
If your dog has a problem with going to the bathroom in the house, the eworst thing that you can do is stick their nose in it or start yelling at them. While you may think this would show the dog that they’re bad for doing that, it will actually just frighten them and they’re more likely to do it again afterwards. Instead you want to talk to them sternly as soon as they have an accident and take them outside so they understand that this is where they’re supposed to be going to the bathroom. It’s also very important to create a routine for the dog, which will teach them what times they eat and what times they’re supposed to go to the toilet.
If your dog has a problem with barking, using a dog training aid may be your best bet. Barking can be important if it’s at night when you want your family and home protected, but if they’re doing it regularly for no reason it can just end up being downright frustrating. It’s good for dogs to bark at night when they hear noises but when they’re doing it constantly during the day and night this can be a huge bother to you and your neighbors. This collar gives a slight shock to the dog every time they bark which teaches them to only bark at certain times.
Pros And Cons Of Electric Dog Fences
With a little bit of research, you can find all kinds of information on electric dog fences. But electric dog fence reviews seem to focus more upon the moral side of the equation than the useful side. An electric dog fence uses a transmitter and receiver to help teach your dog and keep them within a preset boundary. If you are looking into using an electric fence, then honest information is what you need.
Pros
Electric dog fences come in many different types that fit your personal needs. These fences are designed by burying a wire a few inches below ground level and using the wire to transmit a radio signal to a particular receiver on your dog’s collar. The largest advantage pointed out by homeowners is that they have no worries of their yard being covered or overthrown by the placement of a permanent fencing structure.
If you live in a neighborhood that has special covenants, the electric fence may be the only reasonable and inexpensive option. It is low up keep and generally invisible. Neighbors will only notice the fence as you train your dog with the training flags and as you set up the unit.
Electric dog fences are practical in teaching dogs to stay within a certain boundary because they feed directly into the prize system, if the training is done correctly. Since most dogs are very eager to please their owners, training is quick and with frequent reminders, consistent.
Cons
Antagonist say the use of an electric intinsity as cruelty. If you agree with that viewpoint, you don’t need to read any more. The correction is fairly mild, and any good trainer using this system will let you feel the intensity for yourself.
There is no promise that a particularly distracted dog will be able to stay inside the boundaries of the fence. Therefore, this kind of fencing can’t keep others off your property and away from your dog. Children can stand just beyond the wire and bother your pet if they are in the yard, and your pet has little protection.
The fence depends upon your vigilance in maintaining fully charged collars and a system that is working. In a power outage, there is no way for the transmitter to produce either the warning tone or the shock that reminds your dog where to remain.
Helpful Hints
All the fences operate on the same principle. The transmitting wire carries the signal around the perimeter you have set. When your dog approaches the perimeter wearing the collar, he will first get a warning then a shock. Look for a system that meets your individual needs.
Some people need a unit for multiple dogs, others for elevated transmitter wires. Dog size matters very much when purchasing the collar, because you don’t want to shock a small dog too vigorously, but neither do you want a collar that has no effect on your bigger dog.
You can find many different collar styles and set up directions online. Figure out which is best for you and your pet and give it a try. You will be amazed with the results.
A Story Of Four Dog Foods: Finding The Best Chow For Your Hound
We tend to all love our dogs and want to provide them the best life has got to offer. However with so many variations of dog food within the market, it isn’t continually straightforward to spot the simplest food for our dog. Who will presumably feel assured when thus many brands trumpet buzzwords that hit the human aisles not long ago, such as “made in antioxidants,” “highly digestible,” “Omega-3 fatty acids” and “Ultra Premium Formula”?
What we have a tendency to can do, though, is to conduct a easy dog food comparison to determine which foods best work our dog’s needs and our personal schedule. When all, some foods provide abundant larger convenience than the more natural, less processed sorts of food that might require freezing, thawing, cooking and preparation.
Convenience aside, the simplest food to administer your dog depends not on the complete or the fashion, but rather on your dog’s age and any special requirements he would possibly have. As an example, older dogs require food containing a careful balance of protein, fat and fiber. Most business dog food firms address this would like with offerings like senior dog food, containing regarding eighteen % protein, and food for dogs diagnosed with renal failure, containing about 14% protein.
Dare to Compare Dry Dog Food
The vast majority of dog house owners opt for dry dog food. Between the supermarket and specialty pet stores, owners enjoy many brands to choose from. Dry dog food consists of kibble usually made from one primary ingredient such as chicken, beef or lamb. A lot of specifically, the most ingredient is sometimes a meat byproduct that is been processed, dried and sold in packs or luggage for easy dispensing. Needless to say, meat byproducts are way cheaper than meat, thus this sort of dog food is not only simple to store, it’s abundant less expensive than different types.
Onerous kibble comes with some advantages. For example, it offers your dog’s mouth some exercise, and kibble’s less seemingly to contribute to plaque than softer foods.
When comparing brands, it helps to remember that there are primarily two types of dry dog food out there: premium dog food and economy dog food. A sensible owner will avoid buying the economy food, which is made from lower grade ingredients (for example, economy dog food can often substitute low-cost corn for the a lot of expensive meat byproducts). The “finish” result, as it were, is that your dog can’t absorb many nutrients however merely passes the food through his body. Thus additionally to enjoying less nutrition, your dog can produce larger stools — and you may realize yourself with a lot of frequent vet bills.
Other Standard Contenders: Canned, Semi-Moist and Additional
Different categories of dog food embody the semi-moist sort and canned food. Many owners like to combine in some canned food with dry food, to doubtless cowl more nutritional bases while not taking too massive a hit to the pocketbook.
Semi-moist food is attractively convenient to homeowners, and dogs love it. Unfortunately, it could cause dental issues in the mid-term and worse in the long run, as a result of semi-moist food is loaded with corn syrup and other sugars, which dogs just are not designed to process.
Recently, additional natural, “premium” dog food has been introduced to the market, in which higher quantities of quality, nutritious ingredients are used to manufacture the food — usually human-grade, in fact. Since vegetables, fruits, real meat and quality grains are used as the primary protein source in the best-quality dog foods, these foods are a quick route to healthy skin and stunning fur. For the most half, they contain no artificial coloring and preservatives, but are chock-full of vitamins and minerals instead.
Although this food costs more, you’ll be able to feed your dog less of it, because it’s more nutritionally dense. So in terms of both convenience and nutrition, a premium, natural dog food is one in every of the simplest choices offered to your dog, whether or not off-the-shelf or purchased online. Superior Dog Training Points Intended for Conditioning Your Canine
Akeisha wrote to me with some terribly good questions. I’ve included her letter (and my responses) below:
Hi,
It’s Akeisha again.
I do see what you mean if it is on continuously the dog can soon forget it is on and then will behave regardless. Ok, therefore the dog never wears a buckle collar once more? This is often what irks me. I need to be in a position to manage the canine irrespective of what collar is on not just the pinch or it could be no collar in the least and the canine still behaves. What if the owner for some reason dashes the collar then they put the buckle collar on for ID however then forget the pinch collar? Then there is no control.
[Adam Replies] WRONG! The dog gets conditioned. Initiate the collar for awhile. Doesn’t matter.
Does one ever within the coaching return to the buckle collar after months of what you suggest with a canine that is happy with doing the commands?
[Adam Replies] Yes, the canine will the command as a result of he’s happy and he likes it. But eventually, there will be one thing that tempts him. This can be where conditioning comes in.
Think of it like this: You’ve got lived in the identical house for ten years, right? You rise in the center of the night and you reach for the sunshine switch that is to the LEFT of the door. Pretty soon, you get conditioned to succeed in out to the LEFT of the door.
In the future you travel and keep in an exceedingly hotel. You awaken in the middle of the night and reach out to the LEFT of the door for the switch… even though you cognitively saw that the switch is on the RIGHT.
Of course, you may awaken for many nights– maybe even weeks or months– and still reach out to the LEFT, while the switch is currently on the right. Some individuals will continue progressing to the LEFT for the rest of their lives. Some will begin planning to the right.
Those individuals need to be reinforced. Get it?
Motivational corrections if on the correct canine won’t frighten them or build them hate you I understand but are not there alternative ways that except using the collar that will eventually be established thought training that will enable you to take the collar off and have control?
[Adam Replies] Yeah, this manner you can take the collar off and have control, ONCE THE DOG IS CONDITIONED. But eventually you may have to go back and reinforce, for many dogs. And positively if you begin expecting to work the dog around new distractions that it’s never been proofed around, such as chickens if the canine has never seen chickens.
Look, I do not build the rules. The canine isn’t a robot that you can suddenly say, “He is done” and expect him to act consistently for the remainder of his life. Like every relationship you have with another person, boundaries want to be established and maintained. The canine is like your wife or husband… they can eventually check you.
Last query, how will the dog not realize the do not have it on since it feels a ton totally different than the buckle? Its like my id around my neck at school I’ve got gotten used to it but I do realize when it’s off? Just for the record I’ve got no downside with pinches, many members in my four-H club use them and they work great on the proper dog.
[Adam Replies] As a result of the approach you should be using the pinch collar is that the dog (since he has limited reason and logic) will not KNOW that it’s the pinch collar that enables you to provide him smart corrections. But it’s more than the pinch collar. If I put the dog in a range of small yards, with no collar on … and I’m able to chase him down and build him return back to me, if he doesn’t come after I call… then the canine will learn THE UNDERLYING PREMISE that I can make him do it, if he doesn’t. Thus, the pinch collar and therefore the long line make my job easier, but ultimately, the canine is aware of (or he thinks a minimum of) that I’m a person of my word and once I tell him to try to to something: If he doesn’t do it, I am going to form him do it. And his life can be a ton additional fun if he does it willingly. Therefore the canine starts to extrapolate this principle to different commands, too.
Hope I am not being irritating I simply like to grasp why sure trainers price bound ways over others since I like competing in obedience with my canine. Read more other FREE articles about humana one health insurance, catastrophic medical insurance and pos health insurance
